Thursday, 4/17 - Una charla sobra de presos politicos puertorriqueños¬

7:30 - Free.
Drs. Carlos Ivan Ramos and Nozomi Ikuta will discuss the political imprisonment of Carlos Alberto Torres and Oscar Lopez Rivera and the broader historical and political context of their case. April 3 is the eve of the 28th anniversary of Carlos Alberto's arrest, and May 29 is the 27th anniversary of Oscar's arrest. Along with over a dozen other Puerto Rican political prisoners, released by President Clinton in 1999, Oscar and Carlos have been supported by thousands of people in the US, Puerto Rico, and around the world, including most of the churches in the US and Puerto Rico and many Nobel laureates. Come learn about their case and why so many people feel that it is long past time to bring them home. This discussion is a preparatory meeting for a play about the prisoners which we are planning to bring to Cleveland later in the spring.
Sponsored by the Interfaith Prisoners of Conscience Committee and the Cleveland Anarchist Black Cross.

Tuesday, 4/15 - Andrew Flood, Irish Anarchist Writer on
Building a Popular Anarchism in Ireland: A History of the Workers Solidarity Movement

7 PM - Donations accepted.
A decade ago the active anarchist movement in Ireland consisted of little more than a dozen people in two small organizations. Today hundreds of people are active and one banned libertarian demonstration in 2004 saw 5,000 people take part. Anarchists are increasingly replacing Irish republicans as the bogeyman of the mainstream media. This talk explains how this breakthrough happened and details the various struggles anarchists have been involved in.
As part of a 43 city speaking tour of North America Workers Solidarity Movement (WSM) member Andrew Flood presents an illustrated talk about the growth of anarchism in Ireland in the last decade and the role anarchists in Ireland have played in popular struggles there (see http://anarchism.pageabode.com). From labor struggles to justice campaigns for those killed in police custody. From involvement in the anti-war movement to struggles to keep Irelands rural lands free from Shell Oil exploitation. The WSM has moved anti-authoritarianism from the cultural margins to a real political alternative in Ireland. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion of the WSM and the prospects for an international anarchism!
Andrew is an active anarchist organizer and writer, with twenty years experience in Ireland, most of that time as a member of the Workers Solidarity Movement. More recently, he has been become a member of NEFAC and is a founder member of Common Cause, Ontario. His publishing record includes well over one hundred articles, translated into over nine languages, chapters published in three books, and articles in seven English language anti-authoritarian magazines and newspapers. As well as numerous events in Ireland he has been the speaker at meetings in Britain, Italy, Canada, the Czech Republic and the USA and attended conferences in the Netherlands, France, Spain and Mexico.
A partial archive of Andrew's writings, radio interviews and translations can be found at http://www.struggle.ws/andrew.html

Hear the story, told from the point of view of the people involved in the struggle, many of whom were unjustly put on death row after the uprising. Written in cooperation with the men called the Lucasville 5: Siddique Abdullah Hasan (aka Carlos Sanders), Jason Robb, Namir Abdul Mateen (aka James Were), George W. Skatzes and Keith LaMar. The play, Lucasville: The Untold Story of a Prison Uprising describes how the prisoners worked together, black and white, Muslims and members of the Aryan Brotherhood, side by side, to demand better conditions, and it tells how the State of Ohio engineered the convictions.

Sunday, 2/17 - Toby Jones and The Gospel According to Rock music, media, and storytelling

6:30-8 PM - Free Pizza Dinner and Conversation at 5:30pm
This one-man-show will include live performances of several of the songs referenced in his book, rock-based multi-media pieces, and some biblical storytelling. The institutional church has become increasingly irrelevant in the last 50 years, and Christian congregations across denominational lines can't figure out why their membership is dwindling, especially among the younger ranks. National surveys indicate that the majority of 20 to 50-year-olds are more spiritually hungry and alive than ever, yet they are not seeking nourishment from the Church. Toby Jones can explain their absence.
Rock-n-rollers and those who enjoy their music - the 20 to 50-somethings - have long been viewed by the Church as anti-Christian renegades. The Church.s judgmental arrogance has come back to haunt its ever-shrinking congregations. Jones raises the provocative question: What if God has been speaking through these secular rock-n-rollers the way He did through the prophets of old? Using the lyrics of classic rock songs and the scriptures of both the Old and New Testaments, Jones argues, .Indeed God has been speaking through the very medium so many of us have written off as .the Devil.s music..And, if God can speak there, where else might we learn to hear his voice?. In his lively 90-minute show, Toby Jones uses rock-based multi-media pieces, Biblical story-telling, and live performances of your favorite rock classics to reveal that rock lyrics say many of the same things the Bible does about the environment, compassion, freedom, brotherly love, and more. Jones will open your hearts and your ears to God.s voice as heard in many of our secular rock-n-roll favorites.
For more information about Toby Jones and The Gospel According to Rock, visit www.booksandbridges.com. Please call Meredith White-Zeager at 216-906-3026 regarding this Sunday evening show.

Monday, 1/28/08 - 6th Anniversary of Guantanamo Prison - FREE Movie Night

7-9 PM - Hundreds of people remain detained in Guantanamo, without charge and with little hope of a fair trial. Despite international outrage and the US authorities' own stated wish to close the camp, Guantanamo is still holding detainees illegally, after six years. Hundreds languish in cruel, inhumane and degrading conditions, including detainees who have been cleared for release. Detainees continue to be transferred to the camp from secret CIA custody and elsewhere, confirming Guantanamo's role at the heart of the US network of unlawful detention. Guantanamo is a symbol of injustice and abuse. It must be closed down.
Screening of The Road to Guantanamo, plus learn action tools to shut down Guantanamo prison (Street Theatre Plays, Press Release, etc.) and listen to witness Chris Knestrick who will share his erience of civil disobedience (went to jail protesting Guantanamo). Refreshments.

Wednesday, 10/3/07 - Restless Natives Anti-Colonial Dance Theatre by Malavika Mohanan & Denali DeGraf

7pm - Sliding scale price to be announced.
Restless Natives is a travelling performance project that explores the intersection of art, politics, and daily breath. The story is pieced together out of poems and prose from various sources, outlining violence against children, especially by means of illegal weapons and warfare. The dancer asks for a moment of silence in honour of those who died in the tragedy of 9/11. She also seeks days, hours months and years of silence, through pages of history, for millions who were killed by imperialist regimes the world over, including the United States and its allies. She explores the ways in which we can and must sustain ourselves in our search for more peaceful and just ways of living on the land and with each other. The text is embodied through dance (rooted in Bharatnatyam, but drawing from flamenco and other movement forms), and clothed in living music (using instruments and styles from Native and folk traditions of the Americas).

The story is spun open by Malavika Tara Mohanan and Denali DeGraf in an interactive performance, and is made whole by the evolution of a community fabric that depends on everyone in the room. Thus, the second portion is an invitation for everyone to co-create an experience that searches for the artistic, social, physical, and spiritual truth of the community present.

The hope, the dream, is that each one of us leaves feeling closer to understanding what we must resist, what we must create, and the infinity we must ultimately surrender to.

As the film reveals through interviews, animation, and beautiful footage of the city and countryside, the simple act of eating local honors our land, our communities, and our rich natural heritage. The organizing in Oaxaca is among the forefront of struggles for basic survival and independence, and perhaps a foreshadowing of what we may see here in the U.S. as jobs get fewer, expenses go up and the police become increasingly militarized. Hear more about the history of what's going on in Oaxaca, a story that goes back decades, and discuss how we can help the people of Oaxaca hold out against the guns and violence of the Mexican government wielded in the name of law and order. 8 PM
$7 sliding scale (work exchange offered, and no one turned away for lack of $)
500 Miles to Bablyon, directed by David Martinez and produced by Juliet Dervin, is a one-hour documentary film about Iraq under U.S. occupation. Narrated by the filmmaker, using footage shot in Iraq threaded with graphically animated archival sequences to provide historic context, the film will address the current war not simply as a conflict over petroleum profits or a scheme to fill a s coffers, but as part of a larger American imperial project. Through impromptu interviews, glimpses of daily life, still photographs, and footage of car-bombs, demonstrations, night-time graffiti artists, Sufi rituals, and the celebrations following s capture, 500 Miles To Babylon will reveal the complex situation in contemporary Iraq through a personal lens. Far from being a simple anti-war movie, 500 Miles will attempt to illustrate the terrible complexity of a people brutalized by a dictatorship, and the catastrophic results when that system is changed overnight by shortsighted military means. GEORGE SHRUB & satirical songster DAVE LIPPMAN, with Edutainment on VENEZUELA
George Shrub has been traveling throughout his globalized domain, sharing his Point of View (the Right One) so that people won't need their own. He employs anti-folk songs and interventionary anthems to explain (and enforce) that the business of America is none of your business, that unions are never civil, and that the proper place for himself, like Wal-Mart, is everywhere. Lippman , meanwhile, has been trying to keep up with his shadow, Shrub, touring closely behind him. He continues to afflict the complacent, occasionally rhyming in the process. Dave has been known to take the air out of the windbags of the week, de-distort history, and rewrite the classics with parody and thrust.
