The news has been kind to us! Read the write-up in the Plain Press, the community paper of the Cleveland's west side.
12/26/06 - A New Year at C-Space
It's been a while since we've spread the word about the going-ons at C-Space. November and December saw some (for us) huge events at the space, with wall-to-wall participation. We've seen presentations from speakers touring the U.S. or visiting Cleveland specifically for the event, speaking on topics of international importance and precious currency. We're starting to see the beginnings of a regular community at the space, with new people jumping into things and helping make C-Space a better resource for the neighborhood and Cleveland. In November, the new Cleveland Books 2 Prisoners group installed a library of books available to be sent to Ohio prisoners; last weekend they started regular Sunday book-packing days. December, Indio Cortez, a west side poet, started a weekly workshop and open mic for poets to cut their teeth at. Meanwhile, the World People Exchange is opening the space Sunday mornings with fresh, homemade donuts. Our regular C-Space programming has been continuing to amaze us as well; the monthly Speak Your Mind! open mic and jam, hosted by Psychodeliqate, the Millenium Hippie, is a joyous, soul-tickling word party I look forward to all month, and it grows and gets more interesting every month as more people make C-Space a rallying point for their positive community energy. On 12/30, we're making the special New Years' Speak Your Mind! (where the topic is Technology - y2k 2?) an actual party for C-Spacers the city over, to hang out, feel good, eat food, and, of course, the poetry!
We hope that you can make it over to C-Space this January, because there are some really cool things scheduled at the space. The first Saturday in January is also the first "A Taste of Something Different," a monthly stay-at-home vacation where a guest tour guide will lead us on a trip to their home country. Definitely come to TEAM GINA on January 11th: synchronized dance moves, beats and songs political, queer and anti-oppression. They'll be performing with Amy Kasio, Argyle Miss, and touring poet Katz. See you there, or at one of the numerous January movies, or other events yet unscheduled for the month.
And in February: ESCAPE THE NOISE, BET ON THE MOVEMENT silent auction fundraiser. Mark 2/3 on your calendar for another sincerly fun party/art auction. This year, more good music, more good food, more good art. We'll send out an announcement soon with details on the bands, the artists, and the location. If you want to contribute art or gifts to the auction, drop us a line.
11/28 - Need Fundraising Support!
This past month at C-Space has been miraculous. Our initial vision for a diverse, participatory center has been unfolding before our eyes!
At the same time, we're in the middle of a financial crunch. Here are some ideas for how you can participate in fundraising or donate money directly to help keep C-Space afloat.
Contact Kate at kate at clevelandspace dot org or 216-631-2233 if you have fundraising ideas or questions.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF IDEAS FOR C-SPACE FUNDRAISING
1. Throw a house party benefit! A step-by-step guide is available if you contact Kate.
2. Donate art/items, or hit up your artist friends to donate to the C-Space silent auction, planned for early February. To donate, contact Oren at orencasdi@yahoo.com or 216-631-2233.
3. Pass the hat or charge a cover for C-Space at an event you're already throwing or attending.
4. Organize a movie showing, poetry night, stand-up open mic, or music show benefit. And remember, C-Space is a great venue!
5. Ask friends of yours who might be supportive of C-Space to visit the space with you. If they like what they see, ask them to become ongoing donors or volunteers.
6. Sign up as a quarterly C-Space donor, and help us have a more regular income! A sign-up sheet is available at http://www.clevelandspace.org/documents/friendsofcspace.pdf
10/3 - World People's Exchange
Now opening at C-Space:
The Greater Cleveland Immigrant Support Network with a
project grant from the Catholic Campaign for Human
Development will open doors this month to World People
Exchange, an immigrants' drop-in and resource office
in the Clark-Metro Cleveland neighborhood.
World People Exchange will conduct informational meetings about laws, society and other useful information that new immigrants and natives will be interested to know. Topics will include immigration, government, child and elder care, domestic violence and the various cultures of NE Ohio's newcomers.
We will unveil a "people to people" proclamation initiated by the Immigrant Support Network and passed by Cleveland City Council recently. The proclamation links Cleveland with Valencia, Venezuela on a cultural and humanitarian basis.
9/27 - C-Space on MySpace
